Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a very popular procedure among males. The procedure itself is known for correcting and reconstructing the form of the nose and aesthetically enhancing it so as to achieve aesthetic facial harmony among all facial characteristics.

Apart from the cosmetic appearance, this procedure also restores the functions of the nose deriving from deviation of the nasal septum or aims at turbinate reduction. As a general rule, ideal candidates for Rhinoplasty surgery are over 18 years old, right after the completion of their nasal and mid-face growth.

Technique

As a general rule, no skin incisions are made outside the nose but only inside the nose, thus leaving no visible scar. This is why Rhinoplasty surgery is also referred to as closed Rhinoplasty. The appropriate surgical techniques vary and depend upon the shape and size of the nose. Addition or removal of any bone or cartilage is made to further improve symmetry. In certain cases, when the plastic surgeon considers appropriate, you may have they option of the open Rhinoplasty technique, which is more likely to result in visible scarring.

What to expect after surgery:

  • The pain is usually minimal and easily controlled with painkillers.
  • It is recommended not to bend over or lift anything heavy at least for a week.
  • Avoid hitting your nose within the first postoperative period.
  • You should avoid strenuous activities for two weeks, and you should consult your surgeon for certain sports.
  • You are allowed to wear contact lenses but glasses can only be worn over your nose splint for approximately one week. Once it is removed, you are not allowed to wear them for a course of six weeks.
  • The nose splint is removed within the first postoperative week and the sutures used are absorbable.
  • Possible swelling and some bruising are expected side effects that gradually subside and eventually fade within a period of 1-2 weeks.

Risks and Side Effects

There are no complications following Rhinoplasty. The appropriate pre-operative consultation will highlight any functional problems of the nose (e.g. nasal septum deviation or scoliosis) that need to be restored along with the aesthetic approach, in order to achieve the best possible results and improvements in your nasal breathing and sense of smell.

Useful Information

  • Rhinoplasty is among the most challenging procedures, with a proportion reaching 70 percent.
  • It is also among the most difficult procedures since the result is based upon three different criteria: good nose function, good nasal breathing and aesthetic facial harmony.
  • Apart from correcting a deviated septum and other breathing issues, Functional Rhinoplasty is also considered a treatment for sleep apnea, among other nasal issues.
  • It is recommended to inform your doctor in the event of having the flu or allergic rhinitis prior to undergoing the procedure.
