Chin surgery (Genioplasty)
Chin surgery, also known as genioplasty, aims at reshaping and aesthetically enhancing the chin. It significantly contributes to the improvement in the appearance of the facial profile, as the chin can offer harmonious balance to facial characteristics such as the nose. There are also other factors that may indicate the need for chin surgery, aside from cosmetic reasons, such as pathological conditions or facial trauma.
Technique
The surgery is performed with osteotomies or with the use of appropriate silicone implants in the case of a small chin. If your chin is quite large, then a procedure to make a small bone cut across the chin may be necessary.
What to expect after surgery:
- Gauze pads are applied over the skin after surgery.
- Some swelling and hardness may occur in the first postoperative days; they will gradually soften and fade within the immediate postoperative period.
- The pain is usually minimal and easily controlled with painkillers.
- An elastic compression garment is required for 3-4 weeks postoperatively.
- In case of non-absorbable sutures, they will gradually be removed within one week after surgery.
- During the first postoperative days, it is recommended to eat soft foods in order to avoid possible problems.
Risks and Side Effects
Complications following chin surgery are rare. Having an infection or vein thrombosis are possible side effects. Even a mistaken choice or unsuccessful placement of the implant can be fixed through its removal and re-placement.
