Male Abdominoplasty

Male Abdominoplasty is the ideal cosmetic procedure for the tightening of muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall.

The abdomen is one of the areas of the body that is subject to changes due to significant weight lose/gain or proceeding bariatric surgery.

As a result, these changes reflect in the body via excess skin and fat, as well as a change in belly button shape, which leads to loose, heavy folds of belly skin. This is a common problem, which cannot improve even if you follow an exercise program or diet.

Technique

Depending on the severity of the problem, there are two basic techniques for this procedure:

  1. Mini Abdominoplasty: It is addressed to people with small amounts of excess abdominal skin. During a Mini Abdominoplasty, the belly button is usually not repositioned.
  2. Classic Abdominoplasty: This is the most commonly performed type of abdominoplasty. In this case, the belly button is excised and sutured into a new location and it is performed mainly on massive weight loss patients with excess/loose skin in the upper abdomen.

In an abdominoplasty, the removal of excess skin can be performed together with tightening of the muscles (six pack) revealing a smooth, well-toned abdomen.

Incisions involve a single, very small incision that is made below the navel so that it can easily be hidden beneath underwear and swimwear.

What to expect after surgery:

  • During the first 3-4 post-operative days, the pain is usually minimal and easily controlled with painkillers.
  • An elastic compression garment is required on areas treated for a few days post-operatively.
  • Strenuous exercise and activities are restricted for about 4 weeks.

Duration of Results

Abdominoplasty makes the abdomen thinner and more firm by removing the excess abdominal fat and sagging skin, thus improving the overall appearance of the area. The longevity of the results is permanent. Patients who do not gain or lose any significant weight will experience the longest and best possible results.

Useful Information

  • Exposure to the sun and strict diet before surgery should be avoided because it delays the healing process.
  • Smoking should be avoided for about 1-2 weeks before surgery and for about 2 weeks postoperatively to prevent delay of the healing process.
  • The first abdominoplasty procedure performed by Howard Kelly in Baltimore dates back to 1899.
